That average price of $13,520 estimated for the third quarter of 1987 is up from $13,480 in the second quarter and $13.020 in the third quarter last year. In 1967, the average selling price was $3,212. That year the annual median family income was $7,933 and it took 21.1 weeks of household income to cover the average expenditure for a new car.
In the third quarter of this year, the median family income stood at $30.056 a and the average new car purchase took 23.4 weeks of that income. Although such things as average selling prices inexorably climb, other economic factors make a more complex fiscal picture of the auto industry, as reported in a recent Economic Indicators, published by the Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association of the United States Inc. As the average selling price climbs, consumers have gotten some relief by watching the finance charges decline. The automakers' and other finance companies' rates averaged 9.6% in the third quarter, compared with 10.7% in the second. Last year's third quarter was but that reflected sales incentive wars fueled by automakers offering extremely low finance rates.
Bank rates averaged 10.4% for the third quarter, compared with last year. All of this translates into monthly payment books for new cars that average 52.8 monthly payments of $260.72. That compares with 53.8 months and $260.93 in the second quarter and 48.3 months and $264.43 in the third quarter last year. sales The third quarter marked the end of the model year which totaled 15.4 million cars and trucks, a 3.9% decline from the record 16.1 million units sold in 1986 model year. The third quarter's car sales trend continued a familiar pattern of declining domestic sales and climbing imports.
The imports captured a record 32.6% of the domestic market in the quarter, compared with 28.1% in the third quarter last year. The U.S. truckmakers are pushing the imports back. The imports lost market share in truck sales for the quarter, dropping to from the 19.4% of the previous third quarter.
